People are worried about their economic futures, so they aren’t spending money like they have in the past. This leads some to worry that consumers will stay away from the stores this holiday season. Even though people are being very careful where they spend their dollars, it’s not necessary that they keep from celebrating the holidays like they always have. They can even take a trip during the holiday season if they make a point of looking for the best deals that keep the savings in the wallet.

1. Make Christmas Gifts

Christmas gifts don’t have to be the most expensive, store-bought merchandise. People can make their gifts in two different ways. The first is to visit an arts and crafts store where people can find everything they need to make their own holiday decorations. They can also visit websites where they can create a product from a picture they have painted or from a photograph they have taken. For example, a great gift for grandma might be a mug with the grandkids’ picture on it. This would be a very affordable present and would mean a lot more than something impersonal that can be bought in the stores for hundreds of dollars.

2. Use Coupons

Coupons can be used throughout the year, but they are even more useful during the holidays when people are entertaining more often. The grocery stores will also need to compete with each other and they offer sales on the food people typically purchase for their celebrations. Combining coupons with grocery store sales can mean people can keep a large portion of their food budget in the wallet.

3. Seek Deals

The furniture may be a little worn out or the carpet may need to be replaced, and this may mean that people are too embarrassed to entertain at their homes. If the living room needs a new couch, the Internet is the place to go. People can find websites that sell furniture at discounted prices, or they can discover the furniture stores in their local areas that will have the best prices.

4. Set Your Own Prices

The Internet can offer people great opportunities to save money on their travel expenses. On these websites, they have the chance to bid on airline travel, their hotel rooms and their rental cars. On some websites, they can save as much as 40 percent off of their airline tickets and their rental cars. They may be able to upgrade their accommodations for less than the hotel ordinarily charges.

5. Use Apps

Several different apps will help people find the best prices for their travel. Apps have been created for the iPad, iPhone and the Android that will allow people to search through the many deals hotels are having to find the best one. Facebook can also help them in this area; it has an app that helps people bid successfully on their hotel accommodations if they are taking advantage of a bidding website.

Looking for the best prices isn’t a chore, it’s actually a lot of fun. Creating their own gifts and finding the best deals makes people feel more accomplished than if they just bought something in a store. If they like to travel for the holiday, putting their own travel packages together makes them feel good about what they have achieved. Taking the time to perform these actions is enjoyable and keeps them from spending too much money.

10 Ways to Cut Your Monthly Budget

 - by katewatson

The following guest post was contributed Samantha Rodgers

In these trying economic times, smart budgeting and creative finance management go a long way to keep consumers out of debt. As you work on managing money, one area that should receive constant attention is your monthly budget. You might think you’ve got it all under control but these smart budget-conscious tips can help you cut your monthly budget so you can save money while managing your income.

1. Pay Off Low Credit Card Balances.

Several small finance charges can add up to a significant amount each month. Pay off your lowest credit card balance, and then move on to the next low balance.

2. Give Yourself an Allowance.

Set aside a specific amount of spending money each month and don’t go over it. Allow yourself to spend it on whatever you want, but when it’s gone, it’s gone.

3. Decrease Utility Bills.

Most utility companies offer a variety of plans that can help you cut your bill. Call your electric, gas or water providers once each year to find out what you can do to cut your bills.

4. Save Money on Phone Calls.

If you make a lot of phone calls out of the immediate calling area, you can save money by dropping your long distance service and using Skype instead. For the price of two coffees, you can call people worldwide for an entire month.

5. Smart Credit Card Use.

Some major credit cards give you points or rewards for each purchase. If these points can be used to help you buy things you need, such as gasoline for your car or groceries for your family, use your credit card and pay off the balance monthly.

6. Downsize When Possible.

A smaller car, apartment or house can save a great deal of money throughout the year.

7. Reduce Your Grocery Bill.

Buying in bulk when items are on sale or if you have coupons is an effective way to slash your grocery bill.

8. Take Advantage of Freebies.

Head to the library, instead of buying books full price. Swap DVDs with friends to see new movies.

9. Shop Secondhand Stores.

Kids especially can be tough on clothing and toys. Buy secondhand for every day outfits, toys, books and sports gear.

10. Brown Bag It.

Make your own lunch for work and bring coffee in a travel mug to save tons each week.

As you reduce your outgoing expenses, add to your financial safety net with occasional work through the internet or legitimate money earning sources. Even occasional income boosts can provide big results by helping you pay bills more quickly. Big changes made in your budget can save a great deal of money and so can the little changes. Saving money regularly involves developing budget-conscious habits that lead you to think before you spend and be on the lookout for ways to lower bills. Over time, putting these tips into practice consistently can help you save thousands throughout the year.

7 Tips For Saving Money On Your Baby’s Essential Items

 - by katewatson

The following guest post was contributed by Daphne Williams

Planning for a baby is a lot of work, but the care doesn’t end there. You will find that after the baby is born, you will have to plan for all the essential items that they are going to need. How can you get all those things without paying a huge amount of money? There are a few things that you can do. Here  are seven tips that can help you.

1) Samples

When you need medication or if you need diapers when you have run out, there are many ways to get free samples. This is something you want to do if you need medication too. Ask the doctor if they have free samples. There are free mailing lists that you can be a part of that will send you freebies before you have your baby and after the baby is born.

2) Gift Registry

If you haven’t done this yet and you are pregnant, start registering. There will likely be things that you need. This is a perfect way to say, “hey I need these things, can you get them for me?” Then, the things that you didn’t get, you can buy later on as you need. However, gifts from friends will help you have a starting base for when the baby is born.

3) Compare Prices and Sales

We have found that a store at any given time is going to have a sale with the items that you want and need when it comes to your baby. Either shop the sales, or if you see that you go to a place like Walmart and they have the item that you are looking for, take in the ad of that other store. Some locations will price match if you bring in the ad and say that you can get it for a better price if you were to go to get it there. That would be something else you can do. You just have to be a smart shopper.

4) Coupons

Coupons are the next best thing. If you don’t coupon yet, you should start now. They can save you some good amounts of money. Pay attention to the stores that double coupons especially if you are only saving twenty five cents and you could save fifty cents. This can do great things for you when you are looking to save. Use online coupons as well. Be sure to read them carefully.

5) Hand Me Downs

There are all sorts of resales out there so to be sure to check them out. Here you can get some hand me down items, such as sleepers, coats, and other baby essential items. The other thing is to check out sites where people can sell the things they have. This can save you money.

6) Ask for Donations

When you have a need and you are on a social network, post that you have this need. There might be someone who can give you that item which they have laying around from when they had a baby. There are some who might go to buy it for you if you can’t afford this. This is an idea  that you can try as well.

7) Thrift Shops

There are some of you who will quickly find that there are big essential items that you can’t do without like a carseat and a place for your child to sleep. The best thing you can do if you need this would be to check the thrift stores for clothes and the bigger items and such. Also, check local newspapers for garage sales. Baby items are popular at garage sales, and are often in nearly new to new condition.

These are a few ways to save on the essential things. Having a baby costs a lot, but there are ways to save. You just have to look for those options.
