In this post, I will share Side Hustles for Teens and How My Daughter Made Her First £100
As a parent, it’s one thing to encourage your child to be responsible, but it’s another to watch them take initiative and earn their own money.
That’s exactly what my daughter did recently, and I couldn’t be prouder.
With nothing but a paintbrush, some fence paint, and determination, she managed to earn her very first £100 by offering to paint garden fences in our neighbourhood.
Let me share how it all came together and how your teen could try something similar, too.
#Where the Idea Came From
It all started on a sunny Saturday afternoon. We were doing a bit of gardening when she noticed our neighbour struggling to repaint his worn-out fence.
Without being prompted, she offered to help. By the end of the day, not only had she done a fantastic job, but the neighbour handed her £40 for her effort, and just like that, an idea was born
#Turning Effort into Earnings
The following week, she made a simple flyer offering “Fence Painting – £30 per job” and handed it out to nearby homes.
We also posted a quick message in our local community Facebook group. Within a few days, she had three jobs lined up.
She stuck to small to medium-sized fences, worked mostly over weekends, and we got her this painting tool set.
With each job, she gained confidence, speed, and a bit of word-of-mouth promotion, too.
#Staying Safe While Working
As a parent, her safety was my number one priority. Every time she went out to paint, she was always accompanied by an adult, whether it was me, her father, a family friend, or another trusted adult.
We made sure she only accepted jobs from people we knew or had verified, and she never went into homes; all work was done outside and in plain sight.
We also made sure she wore proper protection, including gloves, a mask when needed, and sun protection on hot days.
#How She Hit Her First £100
- Job 1 – £40 from our kind neighbour
- Job 2 – £30 for a small back garden fence
- Job 3 – £30 for a refresh coat on a wooden gate and panel
Just like that, she earned her first £100!
#What She Learned Along the Way
This wasn’t just about the money. She learned:
- The value of hard work (those arms were sore!)
- How to communicate confidently with adults
- Time management and planning around schoolwork
- The importance of safety and setting boundaries while working
#Tips for Parents with Teen Side Hustlers
If your teen is looking to make some extra money, here’s what worked for us:
- Start small and simple. Painting fences was easy to learn and didn’t require a lot of equipment.
- Supervise every job. Always ensure your teen is accompanied and knows they should never work alone or enter anyone’s home.
- Support them. Help with finding safe clients, transporting them to jobs, and setting fair prices.
- Celebrate every milestone. That first £100 felt like a million to her—and to me.
Final Thoughts
Watching my daughter take pride in her work and earn her own money was incredibly rewarding for both of us.
It reminded me that the best financial lessons often come from real-life experience, and with the right support and safety measures, teens can learn and grow in amazing ways.
If your child is eager to earn, encourage them to start with something simple and community-based. That first £100 might just be waiting in the next garden.
